Any homeschooling parents out there have advice for how to make basic arithmetic fun for 1st and 2nd graders?

My kids are good at math, but they just seem bored. I know they need to learn their addition and subtraction facts (the second grader is almost ready for multiplication too). Any fun ways to practice these or sneak them in without them noticing?

This is one of the times where I let technology help me! My kids enjoy playing games on sites like Math Playground, Splash Math, Education.com, and ABCya. We don’t focus on facts in our daily lesson because I don’t think drill-and-kill is appropriate. We do discuss how knowing our facts helps us do other math problems faster though.

Grab some dice. You can roll the dice and multiply and divide and add and subtract. You can play monopoly with money or give the kids shopping lists and have them figure out how much will you will spend on each list and which items are the best deal.

Math U See might be a good curriculum option.  It uses manipulatives/blocks.
